May 05 - Uzbekistan

May 2, 2005

I have been to one Kelin Toy (marriage – Woman Celebration) and two Oril Toys (basically circumcision celebrations-age 6). The area around Nurota is beautiful. Rolling hills, mountains, fresh air. It's really nice. I'm trying to get used to all the Tajik spoken around me (hoping to learn some, though for work Uzbek is necessary). The accent is very different from that in Qibray. My family here is very nice. It consists of a father, mother, eldest son, his wife (baby soon), a brother in Russia, and a 5 year old. I am the oldest "son" in the house. Work is going okay. I need more language to be very effective, though they did get me to introduce myself at one meeting and talk briefly at one meeting celebration. It's fairly warm here, and I think it will only get hotter, but we'll see about that. At least it's dry heat where I am. I hear that in Ferghana Valley it's pretty humid.

We've had a few volunteers leave since we all graduated together. Guess that was to be expected.

I had about an hour conversation with someone last night, originally from Samarkand. I understood him so much better than all of those around me, but I am starting to understand them a little better. Hope that comes along. It was nice to be able to understand some, though. :) Hope to get a tutor soon.
